Soul Asylum, at Tally Ho Theater, Leesburg VA.

Soul Asylum The Start:

Soul Asylum initially formed in the early ’80s under the name Loud Fast Rules when vocalist/guitarist Dave Pirner was still in high school, cutting their teeth as part of the celebrated Minneapolis local music scene.

The band entered the major-label mainstream with 1988’s Hang Time and its 1990 follow-up, And the Horse They Rode In On, before achieving a commercial breakthrough with 1992’s triple platinum Grave Dancers Union. That album spawned several international hits, including “Runaway Train,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and “Black Gold,” and made Soul Asylum alternative radio and MTV staples.

In the ensuing decades, the band which also includes drummer Michael Bland, lead guitarist Ryan Smith and bassist Winston Roye has released a steady stream of albums, including 2020’s Hurry Up And Wait. The latter reflects Soul Asylum’s usual eclectic approach: thrashing songs indebted to punk (“Hopped Up Feelin'”) and classic rock (“Got It Pretty Good”), folk-influenced pop-rock (“Silly Things”), and gorgeous jangle-pop (lead single “If I Told You”).

Soul Asylum History:

With raucous live sets and early releases on the hometown indie label Twin/Tone including the albums Say What You Will, Made to Be Broken and While You Were Out earned it a loyal fan base and widespread critical acclaim.

Indie success led to the band entering the major-label mainstream with 1988’s Hang Time and its 1990 follow-up And the Horse They Rode In On, and achieving a platinum-level commercial breakthrough with 1992’s Grave Dancers Union (3x platinum)and 1995’s Let Your Dim Light Shine. Grave Dancers Union featured the international hits “Runaway Train,” which won a 1994 Grammy as Best Rock Song, and “Black Gold,” while Let Your Dim Light Shine (platinum) spawned the hit “Misery.” The band went on hiatus after 1998’s Candy from a Stranger, during which time Pirner released his first solo effort, Faces & Names.

Soul Asylum Recent Times:

Local H Band

Local H, the iconic alt-rock duo known for their blistering live shows and pioneering the two-piece band set-up, is at the top of their game more than two decades after they first burst onto the music scene. Front man Scott Lucas, who covers both guitar and bass (through an extra pick up in his guitar), and drummer Ryan Harding have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, buoyed by global touring along with the release of some of their most critically acclaimed work to date.

Local H History:

Local H’s first major release was 1995’s Ham Fisted, but it was their follow up album As Good As Dead that positioned the band as one of the elites in what was a groundbreaking decade for rock music. With multiple radio hits on the album, “Bound For The Floor” emerged as a generational anthem and remains a staple on playlists around the country over two decades later.

Their widely praised 1998 concept album Pack Up the Cats, produced by the legendary Roy Thomas Baker, solidified Local H as a leader in the genre and the albums that followed were reflective of not only the band’s definitive character, but as well their relentless effort to give their audience as much of themselves as possible. While recipients of numerous accolades over the years, Local H has always kept the focus on their fans, which can be seen by the awe inspiring and often times daunting tour schedule the band has kept up year after year.

Local H Recent Times:

The last three years have seen a multitude of releases from the band in various forms. In 2015, Local H celebrated the 25th anniversary of their first show and released a career-spanning coffee table book, “Local H: Twenty-Five Years of Skin In The Game”. That same year they released Hey, Killer, their eighth full length studio album, to near unanimous acclaim. In 2016 the band celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of As Good As Dead with a successful three month national headline tour (partnered with their first live Blu-Ray DVD, “Straight Outta Zion”, shot at the Metro in Chicago during a weekend of sold out shows).

2017 was perhaps Local H’s busiest year, the band continued to tour extensively not only as headliners, with hugely successful tours with The Toadies and Helmet, and career highlight performances on Metallica’s sold out stadium tour. Publishing another book “The Last Picture Book Outta Zion or: How We Learned To Stop Worrying About Cell Phones And Love The Photos Of John Oakes”, an intimate behind the scenes portrait of the band shot by photographer John Oakes. 2018 no sign of slowing down. Local H released their second live record the ferocious Live In Europe to coincide with their second European tour in the space of a year. A new single produced by Ken Andrews of Failure, simply titled “Innocents”, is being released to digital platforms to coincide with the band joining the Summerland Tour with Everclear and Marcy Playground this May.

Local H Stage Presence:

Local H Band, played around 1 hour or so, as a 2 piece band, they not only brought on their high energy, fast pace music, energizing the crowd with the high velocity playing. It was like dynamite, you got the feeling that it was a explosive show.

Local H Musicians are:

  • Scott Lucas – Vocals – Combo Made Lead & Bass Guitar
  • Ryan Harding – Drums

UFO, at Tally Ho Theater, Leesburg VA.

UFO – The Classic Rock Band

UFO is a English rock band that was formed in London in 1968. They became a transitional group between early hard rock and heavy metal and the new wave of British heavy metal. The band’s current lineup includes vocalist Phil Mogg, lead guitarist Vinnie Moore, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Neil Carter, bass guitarist Rob De Luca, and drummer Andy Parker. They have gone through several line-up changes, leaving Mogg as the only constant member. In May 2018, Mogg announced that he will retire from UFO after one last tour as a member of the band in 2019.

UFO Career:

Career spanning 52 years, UFO have released 22 studio albums, 14 live recordings, 16 compilation albums and one album of cover songs. They achieved moderate success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with several albums and singles (including their 1979 live album Strangers in the Night) in the UK and US Top 40 charts, and have sold over 20 million records worldwide. Some of their best-known songs include “Doctor Doctor”, “Rock Bottom”, “Natural Thing”, “Lights Out”, “Too Hot to Handle” and “Only You Can Rock Me”. UFO are considered one of the greatest classic hard rock acts, and often cited as one of the key influences on the 1980s and 1990s hard rock and heavy metal scenes. The band were ranked number 84 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”.

Mogg Stepping Back:

In May 2018, vocalist Phil Mogg announced that UFO’s 50th anniversary tour in 2019 will be his last one, as the front man of the band, who may also either split up or move on with a replacement for him. Mogg explained, “This decision has been a long time coming. I’ve considered stepping down at the end of UFO’s previous two tours. I don’t want to call this a farewell tour as I hate that word, but next year’s gigs will represent my final tap-dancing appearances with the band.” He added that “the timing feels right” for him to quit, and that “there will be a final tour of the U.K. and we will also play some shows in selected other cities that the band has a strong connection with. But outside of the U.K. this won’t be a long tour.

Longtime keyboardist and guitarist Paul Raymond died from a heart attack on April 13, 2019 at the age of 73. Two weeks after later, it was announced that Raymond’s initial replacement Neil Carter would be rejoining UFO for the remainder of the band’s final tour.

UFO’s Stage Presence:

UFO – The Classic Rock Band, played around an hour and half or so, and without leaving the stage doing a quick encore. The energy and fierce pace that they had on stage was awesome, interjecting the crowd into the show, probably outpacing most bands based on the energy and enthusiasm.

UFO Musicians are:

  • Phil Mogg – Vocals
  • Vinnie Moore – Lead Guitar
  • Rob De Luca – Bass Guitar
  • Neil Carter – Keyboards
  • Andy Parker – Drums

Damon Johnson, at Tally Ho Theater, Leesburg VA.

Damon Johnson – American Guitarist

Damon Johnson is an American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, currently a solo artist and member of Thin Lizzy. In the 1990s he co-founded Brother Cane, and later joined Alice Cooper’s band as lead guitarist. He was also the lead guitarist and co-songwriter for hard rock group Black Star Riders from 2012 to 2018. Johnson has also released several solo albums and his songs have been recorded by many artists including Stevie Nicks and Carlos Santana.

Damon Johnson’s Beginning:

During his grade school years. It was there that he became obsessed with guitar and formed his first garage band, called Renegade, with other 8th grade friends. He played with Pat Upton’s band Headline to large crowds in Upton’s bar, P.J.’s Alley in Guntersville, for three years.

An offer to join Split the Dark, an established band fronted by former members of the power-pop band Hotel, prompted Johnson’s move to Birmingham, Alabama in 1987. Split the Dark was a very popular act on the Southeast US college club circuit, and had won the MTV “Basement Tapes” competition in 1986 but failed to secure a record deal.

He would later get his first taste of “bands with record deals” as the guitarist for the Atlanta, Georgia band Witness in 1988, and with the Memphis, Tennessee band, Delta Rebels, in 1989. During this time he also performed with the bands Chinatown (with Eric Dover) and Chyld. It was with Chyld that Johnson garnered the attention of the A&R at Virgin Records. After securing a developmental deal in November 1990, the label eventually persuaded Johnson to take over the lead vocal position, and change the band’s name to Brother Cane.

In The 2000’s

Damon was recruited for Alice Cooper’s band in 2004. He co-wrote and recorded with Alice Cooper on his album Dirty Diamonds and toured with the band from 2004 to 2007, leaving to commit to his new band, Whiskey Falls. Johnson returned to the Alice Cooper Band in the summer of 2009, and was featured in Cooper’s 2010 live concert DVD & CD, Theatre of Death – Live at Hammersmith. Johnson worked his fifth tour with Alice Cooper in 2011, and departed the band in September of that year to become a full member of Thin Lizzy. Cooper is also credited with assisting greatly in Johnson’s beloved golf game, as the two played hundreds of rounds in their years of touring the world together.

In December 2012, Johnson co-founded the Thin Lizzy spin-off band, Black Star Riders, whose first album All Hell Breaks Loose was released in May 2013. Johnson developed a songwriting partnership with front man Ricky Warwick and the pair co-wrote all the songs on the album: “I joined Thin Lizzy because I wanted to play those great songs with Scott Gorham and Brian Downey. But let me be clear about this I’m in the Black Star Riders because of Ricky Warwick.”

After touring across Europe, the US and Japan throughout 2013 and the first half of 2014, Black Star Riders recorded their second album, The Killer Instinct, released in February 2015, reaching № 13 in the UK. Johnson stated: “The days of me hopscotching back to Alice Cooper or a Slave to the System album are past. This is the best band I’ve ever been in. We’re firing on all cylinders.”

Tally Ho Theater is in Leesburg Virginia. Located around 30 miles west of Washington DC. Leesburg features plenty of shopping and restaurants. The Tally Ho Theater is a old movie theater, converted to a concert venue. The stage is around 30 by 40 ft, and appears to work for most all bands and shows. In my opinion the Tally Ho Theater is a great venue to see your favorite band.
